High River Reflections | Caroline Phillips | Julie Bates, Murray River SA

In late 2016 the high flow event on the Murray River caused by heavy and consistent rainfall upstream of South Australia, called for a swift and united response from the tourism industry operators, Government and agencies. These were the highest flows seen in 23 years, and posed a number of logistical and public perception challenges for the industry, Destination Riverland and Murray River, Lakes and Coorong Tourism Industry Alliance. Recognising a joint approach was needed, the two organisations have been working together since October 2016 to deliver a range of outcomes for tourism industry operators and stakeholders. The success of this work was highlighted by consistent, positive messages in all media, an encouraging number of consumers continuing to make the most of river destinations and a minimised impact to operators relative to previous high river events.
