Guest speaker: Ian Nightingale | Industry Participation Advocate, Office of the Industry Advocate.

How public sector spending can support industry diversification and growth in the private sector.

Ian will use the following case study to support his presentation:
Bowhill has benefited from South Australia’s Industry Participation Policy, working on numerous infrastructure projects. “Our company plans to expand our Bowhill manufacturing facility and invest in specialised equipment and workshop extensions. The work we now have on large infrastructure project is a direct result of the State Government’s Industry Participation Policy. It will be a huge boost to a small regional community like Bowhill and will provide the opportunity for young people living in the region who want pursue trade careers. Without the Office of Industry Advocate, Ian Nightingale and our state government’s recent support of our industry it is my belief, Bowhill Engineering, would not have been seriously considered for this work”.
Jeremy Hawkes | Managing Director

Jeremy Hawkes and Jodie Hawkes from Bowhill Engineering will also present from an industry perspective. They will highlight how the Industry Participation Policy and other Government initiatives have assisted them, as well as discuss the importance of utilising the opportunities available.

Ian Nightingale | Industry Participation Advocate | The Industry Advocate

Ian Nightingale was appointed Industry Participation Advocate by Premier Jay Weatherill on 4 February 2013.

Over the last four years Ian has advocated strongly for local businesses to get a fair share of State Government expenditure as it can provide a huge boost for businesses and the community through the flow-on benefits of jobs and additional economic activity. Ian is committed to helping these businesses win Government contracts and leverage the opportunities these contracts can provide to grow and diversify.

Ian’s career achievements have been diverse as the previous Chief Executive for the Department of Primary Industries and Regions SA and also the former Department of Planning and Local Government (DPLG) plus a range of other senior positions in the State Government.

Ian’s move into Government followed a successful career as the Chief Executive of the Eyre Regional Development Board, General Manager of the Lincoln Cove Development Company in Port Lincoln and having owned other private business interests in Adelaide and Port Lincoln.

During his time in Port Lincoln his company had management responsibility for the establishment of both commercial and tourism ventures for Lincoln Cove Development Company, and to enhance the profile of this significant marina development. This included Lincoln Cove Apartments, Dangerous Reef Cruises & Underwater Viewing Platform, Greenpatch Farm, Lincoln Cove Recreational Marina.

In addition to these operations Ian also owned and operated the Dockside Tavern in the Lincoln Cove Marina.

Ian has also held Board positions on a number of industry associations and not for profit organisations.

Jeremy Hawkes | Manager Director | Bowhill Engineering

Jeremy is the Managing Director at Bowhill Engineering – a 2nd generation family business. He started as an Apprentice Heavy Diesel Mechanic. At 27 Jeremy became MD after the tragic loss of his brother/business partner and health issues with his father. His core responsibility is to be the strategist and future direction setter of the business to ensure its sustainability. He must continuously prioritise team building and culture building initiatives and must be able to inspire staff, as well as maintain the company’s values. Jeremy is the face of Boweng, and loves to get in on a project early and help with the design methodology using a collaborative approach with clients to ensure win/win outcomes.

Jodie Hawkes | Chief Financial Officer | Bowhill Engineering

Jodie Hawkes is Jeremy’s wife of 17 years. With four gorgeous kids, Jodie has worked part-time at Bowhill since 2002, only more recently becoming CFO. Ridiculously organised and a little OCD! However, she loves to get the job done and stay focused with determination to ensure that goals and objectives are met. Jodie loves new innovative ideas and seeing their development through to implementation. Her core role is to work “on” (not in) the business to ensure that Boweng “choc’s the wheel” on continuous improvement, including strategy implementation.
