Tourism is a complex industry with a broad range of businesses, organisations and government departments.    It can be hard to work out who does what.  The information below is designed to provide you with basic information on the organisations of relevance to you.

Independent, non-government body

Main role: representing the tourism industry in South Australia and enabling quality product

SATIC is the peak tourism body in South Australia, representing the interests of tourism business, the industry and regions.  SATIC strongly promotes the value of tourism and provides a united voice to advocate for a positive tourism business environment.

SATIC supports a quality standard of tourism in South Australia through the administration of Accreditation programs, the South Australian Tourism Awards, training and the annual Tourism Conference ‘Inspiring each other, improving together’.  SATIC is a membership based organisation.

State Government Agency

Main role: marketing of South Australia as a tourism destination, events, access and infrastructure.

The SA Tourism Commission markets the state’s tourism product intrastate, interstate and internationally to ensure that South Australia is a part of any Australian holiday. It concentrates on developing the state’s competitive strengths – vibrant Adelaide, food and wine, festivals and events, and accessible nature.

The SA Tourism Commission also works to secure, manage and sponsor major events, to attract investment and develop strategic tourism assets.

Main role: tourism policy, programs and research

Austrade works on a range of tourism policy, projects, programs and research to strengthen Australia's tourism industry and to grow Australia's tourism market share in a volatile and competitive global environment.

Federal Government Agency

Main role: Marketing Australia internationally

Tourism Australia is the Australian Government agency responsible for the international marketing of Australia as a destination for leisure and business travel.  The organisation is active in around 30 key markets and its activities include advertising, PR and media programs, trade shows and industry programs, consumer promotions, online communications and consumer research.

Tourism Australia works with the Australian tourism industry and federal, state and territory governments to maximise the industry’s economic contribution and to provide industry with a long-term vision and focus.

 

Tourism Research AustraliaTourism Research Australia (TRA)

Federal Government Agency

Main role: International and Domestic tourism research.

TRA is Australia's leading provider of quality tourism intelligence across both international and domestic markets.   TRA collects research and intelligence across the whole tourism industry and undertakes respectable, reliable research and analysis.  TRA produce both the IVS and NVS reports.  TRA data underpins government tourism policy and helps improve the performance of the tourism industry for the benefit of the Australian community.

Main role: Research

The ABS is Australia’s official statistical organisation.  By providing a high quality, objective and responsive national statistical service, the ABS assists and encourages informed decision-making, research and decisions within government and the community.
